The Talk of the Tourney (Monday, 28 May 2007)
Memphis star has the pundits scrambling to see his games.

The recruitment of one of the nations best is really starting to heat up. Scouts were arriving early to get some of the prime sitting spots to view Memphis St. George phenom Elliott Williams. The 6-4 swingman did not disappoint. He would finish the event as the 17 and under division's third leading scorer at 26.0 points per game and helped lead his M33M squad to the final four of the Select division.

M33M finished 2-1 in pool play and added playoff victories over Worldwide Renegades (94-74) and Team Philly (71-61) before bowing to eventual champion National Christian 65-62. M33M also featured another outstanding Tennessee prepster in Sampson Carter (Hamilton) who showed a sweet mixture of outside marksmanship and quick, blow-by moves to the bucket.

Williams was rewarded for his sterling performance with a spot on the All-Tournament squad.

Laurence Bowers

Bowers would seem to be tailor made for Anderson’s running, trapping system. An accomplished shot-blocker, he runs the floor very well and can slide back and forth between the three and the four, though his AAU and high school coaches said he’ll need to hone his handling skills in order to play the wing in the Big 12 Conference.

"He can shoot, block shots – he’s a real good shot blocker – rebound, run the floor. He needs to work on his dribbling a little bit before he can become a ‘three,’ but he’s very athletic. Extremely athletic," said his AAU coach with the M33M Ballers, Ernie Kuyper. The intangibles are there as well, said Kuyper. "He’s a great kid, first. He’s got a great attitude, he’s a great worker and he brings up the attitude of the players around him. He’s got the winning attitude."

Similarly, Bowers is a huge fan of Anderson’s. "I love Coach Anderson and I love Coach T.J. [Cleveland] – and Coach Watkins and Coach Zimmerman too," he said. Anderson "is a real down to earth type guy. I like his style. I like his swagger. I like the forty minutes of hell kind of basketball he likes to run. I don’t like slow-paced basketball."

The Missouri staff has made it apparent it very much would like Bowers to join the current three-man class. He also has offers from Marquette, Arkansas and UTEP, but it seems MU is clearly in the lead at this stage. He’d like to decide by the end of November, after another trip to Columbia. "I loved it there. It was real nice," he said of his first trip.

What does the Mizzou staff see in him? "Athleticism, they stress that a lot. I can handle, I can shoot, I’m working on my three-point range, but I can shoot inside three-point rage. Also, I play over the rim a lot," said Bowers, who sported a 32-inch vertical leap before suffering an MCL injury last year that has since healed.

Christian Watford

In addition to his on the court skills, Watford’s leadership and character are also great assets. According to his coach, Ernie Kuyper, Watford has played a big role In the continued development of the team, and shows great maturity and determination. Kuyper had nothing but praise for Watford’s intangibles:

"He is our leader, He’s our main guy, the kids know it. The younger kids have to learn from him. I wouldn’t want my younger kids learning from any other player in the country. What you’re getting from him is what I call a killer. He wants to win worse than any kid I’ve ever coached. I’ve only coached five or six years, but he wills himself to win. He’ll do anything for his team to win. He’s a loyal kid and a hard worker."

I would be willing to say he’ll step in and do what it takes. You’ll have no problems with him off the court, he’ll do anything on or off the court, anything he has to do. "He’s a hard-nosed kid, a hard worker, everything you want when you’re a coach. The kid’s first class. You not only get a great basketball player, you get a great kid."
